Xylitol (birch/plant sugar alcohol)
A natural sweetener from birch and other plants, popular in sugar-free gum and mints. Commonly reached for around oral health and cavity resistance, since it doesn't feed the bacteria that cause tooth decay. It has roughly the same sweetness as sugar but with about 40% fewer calories. It occurs naturally in small amounts in some fruits and vegetables, though commercial xylitol is usually extracted from birch or corn cobs.
